I discovered this special net bag by chance in Tokyo in 2016 – far from the city’s well-known shopping streets. Its lightness, structure, and remarkable durability immediately caught my attention. Weighing just 35 grams, it can carry up to eight kilograms. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and felt compelled to learn more about the craftsmanship behind it – which led me to a story as fascinating as the product itself.

These net bags are handcrafted by the Khmu, an Indigenous community in northern Laos whose culture dates back thousands of years. In small, remote villages, the bags are made entirely by hand – using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

The fibers come from fast-growing pea shrubs native to the region. They are split, dried, spun, and then carefully woven into bags of different sizes and shapes. From vine to finished piece, it takes around two weeks to complete a single bag. Each one is unique – and a testament to a living craft tradition.
